What is IKEA Kreativ?
Kreativ is a multiview 3D home design and shopping tool that lets users place IKEA products in a virtual room and style it freely. Every year, more than 10M customers in 100+ countries use Kreativ to reimagine their dream homes.
Why Measurements?
Accurate and intuitive sizing drives customers' confidence in a 3D design tool. However, until Measurements were launched, Kreativ surfaced little size data, which left customers confused and undermined their trust in the designs.
The PRoblem
Visualize measurements in virtual 3D rooms to aid customer design

Customer Needs
Over time, demand for measurement-related features became one of the top voices we heard from customers.
Item Dimensions
Customers want a clear sense of each item's physical size.
Product Spacing
Customers want to see item to item/wall spacing for accurate planning.
Room Dimensions
Customers need assurance that the digital twins reflect their rooms' dimensions.

Design Principles
Early on, I defined design principles to guide the visual exploration, ensuring measurements integrate seamlessly into the Kreativ experience.

Non-Disruptive
Visual style should be subtle and unobtrusive to other elements in the scene.

Multi-view
The display of measurements should be available in multiple room views.

Visibility
There needs to be good contrast between measurements and the room scenes.

Product Dimensions
Product dimensions surface after an item is selected, visualizing the length, width, and height to help users assess how much space it occupies.

Early Explorations
As it often turned out, it took multiple rounds of trial and error to get things looking right and working reliably in the end.
Pattern 1

Weak 3D Geometry
The first pattern failed to match items' 3D geometry. It worked fine on rectangular products, but appeared unstructured and loose on circular or oval items that are common in IKEA catalog.
Pattern 2

Obtrusive Design
In some views, drawing all 3 dimension lines with this pattern would force at least one of the lines to cut through the object, breaking the non-disruptive principle.
Pattern 3

Poor Contrast
Contrast is the main issue here. Carpets are common in room scenes, but busy carpet patterns can make the overlaid product dimensions difficult to read.
A New Direction
Given the drawbacks in each early pattern, I conducted competitive research across 3D products. The bounding box, nearly universal in 3D modeling tools, emerged as a strong direction.

Design Iterations
The bounding box plus product dimensions help lock the item’s geometry in place. I removed edges behind the front face to reduce visual clutter. In the meantime, labeled edges were highlighted with solid lines while supporting edges were illustrated with dotted lines to keep the item unobtrusive.
Product Spacing
Product spacing appears on hover, separating it from product dimensions via a different interaction, which keeps the scene clean. It shows the item's gaps to surrounding objects so users can gauge clearance.

Design Iterations
In parallel, I led multiple iterations to explore design patterns, holding to the same principles and ensuring users can clearly differentiate product spacing and product dimensions.

Room Dimensions
Due to technical limitations, room dimensions are only available in dollhouse and top-down views. It shows the lengths of the room's main wall segments so that users can compare the model with their real space.

Mobile Design
After establishing the web design, I applied the same patterns to mobile for consistency, where it also performed well on smaller screens.
