What is IKEA Kreativ?
Kreativ is a multiview 3D home design and shopping tool that lets users place IKEA products in a virtual room and style it freely. Every year, more than 10M customers in 100+ countries use Kreativ to reimagine their dream homes.
Legacy Solutions
Prior to Room Builder, Kreativ offered 3 pathways to create a virtual room for decoration: single view capture, HELA capture, and showrooms. Each served different customer needs but also with notable limitations.
Given these constraints, customers repeatedly asked for the ability to build a fully customizable 3D room from scratch, accurately mirroring their physical space without having to scan through the IKEA app.

We split room building into 4 steps: select a common room shape as a starting point, set wall dimensions, add doors and windows, and edit floor texture and wall color for room style customization.

A key focus of my design was to enable the adding/deletion of room openings to align with users' room structure. We provided 8 common door and window types to select. Once an opening is added, users can freely reposition it.
Room openings can vary greatly in size based on the room layout. As such, another frequent request from users was to support the resizing of default openings to match their real world space.
The Refined Solution
Given its usability, accuracy, and flexibility, the input field design was selected as the path forward. We moved it to a bottom strip to reduce scene clutter and switched to a white theme to match the page style.
Results
Since launching in late 2024, we have seen significant metric improvement on Room Builder, including higher Web CSAT, more active customer engagement, and a larger added product count per room.
